'take a cup o' kindness'
Yes, I am one of the many who mumble my way through the classic New Year's tune, unabashedly grinning, a word here and there, staying in key but without care regarding my slightly chimp-like appearance. Sadly, there are many songs that receive a similar butchering on my behalf but I digress, enough is enough. This New Year's I will belt out the correct words knowing a bit of history to boot and happily share my newly acquired wisdom with you. The timeless Auld Lang Syne, by Scottish poet Robert Burns dates to the 1700's and nods to friends of 'long long ago'. The song and melody have appeared in countless films and been covered by even more artists, marking events from holidays and farewells to military honors and soccer matches. A gorgeous rendition found here is thought to capture the original folk sensibility. Oh, if only I had this crisp whispery full Scottish voice. Three days to practice, my friends, so choose your party dress along with your appropriate accent wisely and best wishes on fine tuning the words in between.
Above, a lovely serving dish just for the occasion by fellow poppytalkhandmade vendor, Rae Dunn. Cheers to a prosperous and joyful '09.
